PREPARING FOR THE JOB SEARCH
Introduction
Job searching can be a challenging and often time-consuming process. Whether individuals are entering the job
market, looking to switch careers, or have experienced unexpected job loss, effective preparation is crucial to a
successful job search.
Self-Assess/Reflect (Identify Your Target):
Individuals are encouraged to figure out what they want to do and consider a new job search question: “What
problem do you want to solve?” Taking the time to determine what they want to do, what they are good at, and what
they enjoy is essential. This process can help individuals narrow down their job search, whether they want to stay in
their current industry or explore new fields, and identify the type of company culture they desire.
Create a Powerful Marketing Campaign (Improve Your Personal Brand / Make Your Profile Visible):
Resumes (Improve Your Personal Brand)
Understand the importance of a resume as a representation of your personal brand, focusing on creating a resume
that accurately reflects your skills and is tailored to the positions you're pursuing.
Clean Up Your Online Presence (Make Your Profile Visible)
Individuals should ensure their social media accounts are clean and professional, with privacy settings adjusted to
manage visibility. Maintaining a clean and open LinkedIn profile is especially important, as many recruiters require it
as part of the application process.
Conduct In-depth Research:
It's essential to be familiar with job search platforms and tools, such as job boards ( e.g., Indeed, LinkedIn,
Glassdoor) , company websites, and niche industry-specific websites. Utilizing job search engines that allow filtering
of job postings based on location, job type, and salary range is recommended. Researching potential employers and
understanding their mission, values, and structure can provide valuable insights.
Network and Interview:
Network
Building and maintaining a professional network is key. This can be achieved by attending industry events, joining
online forums or social media groups related to one's field, and scheduling informational interviews with
professionals in the desired industry. Effective networking can open doors to unadvertised job opportunities.
Interview
Practicing interviewing to gain confidence and refine responses is crucial. Researching common interview questions
and tailoring responses to highlight skills and experiences is recommended, as is familiarizing oneself with the
company's culture and values.
